Cleaning and tending to the house is already a lot of work and if you’re like me, the last thing I desire is to put in all that hard work with products that is making my environment toxic for my family and myself.
According to the Environmental Working Group common household cleaners and air fresheners are filled with over 530 human made chemicals. These chemicals can live for several months after initial use in our environments.
These chemicals have been linked to reproductive issues, breathing complications, and increasing the risk of cancer. They’ve also found that these chemicals may harm our fur babies as well (Cohen, L., & Jefferies, A. (2019). Environmental Exposures and Cancer).
A 2018 study revealed that chemicals from cleaning products and fragrances contribute to half of our air pollution. This type of pollution can live for over twenty years in our environment.
Why going organic can help.
Organic cleaners can improve the quality of environments, making it safer for all life forms.
These cleaners can reduce our children’s exposure to harmful chemicals.
It can also help lower the manufacturing of chemical cleaning products. Organic cleaners are often packaged in biodegradable material which can really reduce waste and pollution.
However; many manufactures have caught on to the shift in ‘go greener’, and still work to hide harmful chemicals behind safer labels.

Spring Cleaning Tips
- Don’t forget the dishwasher. The rubber lining of dishwashers and refrigerators can contain built up bacteria.
- It’s time to toss what isn’t being used. Whether it is clothes you haven’t worn but keep ‘saving’ for another day, old makeup and lotions that have been sitting in the cabinets, or the toys your children no longer play with- tossing the old out allows room for an energetic cleanse and the opportunity for new items.
- One of the most common areas that are missed during cleaning routines is the sanitization of doorknobs and drawer handles.
- Pouring boiling water down the sink can keep bugs and odors away.
- Cleaning baseboards with a dryer sheet can help reduce the accumulation of dust.
- Throw out old spices.
- Change your filters.
- Pillows do expire. Pillows should be replaced every 1-2 years.
